It is seriously disgusting. That is in part thanks to the leaking rear main seal I had. I have it here because having my tech do more work would just be too much money and he doesn’t feel comfortable doing this job. I have to pull the bellhousing and front cover because the pilot bearing disintegrated and wore out my input shaft.

As you can see it is very hourglassed. I could replace the shaft which is $400 and then would require full transmission tear down as a new shaft would have to be shimed and put into place. Thankfully there is a wonderful place called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . These wonderful people will weld on new material and mill the shaft down back to spec. Then I will be able to place the same shaft in my transmission without shimming it. This means I can take off the bellhousing and the front plate and take it out from the top. This whole ordeal will be $80 +s&h and be about a 3-5 turnaround time. Sometimes fixing is better than replacing.

So that shaft undoubtedly was manufactured with a certain heat treat process for hardening or tempering. When you weld you heat up the original material and foul that up.
What are they doing to restore the correct hardness? If they don’t get it right and it is too hard it may crack, or if it is too soft it may get chewed up.

Not 100% sure. That’s just basically what they do. I am not the first person to do it. Other T56 people have had it done and they seem to be holding up.

Why dont you just mill it one size down, and use a spigot bearing with a smaller inner diameter? Seems a lot less work, and without the risk of damaging the shaft through heat. It’s not like you have to buy the bearing from pontiac. Just buy one to the size you need from a regular bearing shop.
